Impact of the Rivalry

The Minnesota Vikings vs Green Bay Packers Rivalry has existed from the very beginning. When the Vikings first came on the NFL scene in the early ’60s, many Minnesotans were longtime Packers fans. When St. Paul suddenly became host to an NFL team, however, lines were drawn. Minnesotans and the people of Western Wisconsin had to choose whether they were Packers loyalists or Vikings converts.

For the first decade of the rivalry, the Vikings were the underdogs. They were coached by Norm Van Brocklin, a newly retired player who had just beaten the Packers in the NFL Championships. This spurred on Packers coach Vince Lombardi, who desperately wanted to beat Brocklin.

In the ’70s, however, the narrative flipped. The Packers only beat the Vikings four times during this decade, which led to much jealousy among Packers fans. Since then, the two teams have been largely equal.

Exciting Moments

The Packers-Vikings rivalry has led to many notable sports moments. For example, famed Packers quarterback Brett Favre came out of retirement in 2009 to play for the Vikings after a prolonged public feud with the Green Bay management. Favre was involved in another famous Packers v. Vikings moment. In a 2000 game, Favre threw a long pass in overtime. A Vikings cornerback deflected the ball, and Antonio Freeman, who was on the ground, made the catch at the 15-yard line. He then made a touchdown for a 26-20 win. Al Michaels, the game’s announcer, famously responded by saying, “He did what?”
